Exist in the Zone
Have you ever been so concentrated on what you were doing that time just flew by? Maybe you started reading a new book or got hooked on a new game, and before you knew it 5 hours had passed. Or perhaps you went for a run, got caught up in your music, and ran twice as far. These are just a few examples of what happens when you’re “in the zone”. It’s a different realm of time when you exist here. Everything around you fades away and the only thing that matters is what you’re doing.
When you’re in the zone you are so focused on the moment that time stops. But being in the zone doesn’t mean that you zone out. You are filled with energy and excitement because you’re fully enjoying what you are doing. The purpose of this practice is to find your zone so that you can experience what it feels like to truly live in and surrender to the moment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Think back to an activity or time in your life when you may have experienced this sense of timelessness. Was there ever an activity that you enjoyed so much you could do it for hours on end? Or is there something you loved doing so much that you were forced to stop just so you would eat? Remember any sport, activity, or hobby that made you feel this way. It could be from when you were a child or something you still enjoy doing now. But it shouldn’t be anything that you were forced to do for hours on end -like practicing an instrument you disliked.
Once you think of one or more activities that made you feel this way, do your best to hold onto that feeling. Remember how it feels to be swept away in the moment. When you don’t have any worries or cares in the world besides what you’re fully engaged with. If you’ve never experienced this feeling and have no past connection to being in the zone, that’s completely normal! Hopefully you now have an idea of what to look for. The goal is to find something you can do now that brings you that same sense of timelessness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Challenge yourself for a day to try out the activities, as well as any current hobbies, to see if you can find your “zone”. It’s not something you can do on demand. It takes complete concentration, clarity, and serenity. So don’t get discouraged if you can’t get into the zone right away. We all have the ability to achieve this state, but it takes time and a willingness to surrender. You have to give 100% of yourself to the moment, but once you do you’ll feel like a weight’s been lifted off of you. Then you can practice living in the now because you’ve learned how to exist in its timezone.
